“Once the DFC is operational about 60 per cent of road traffic would shift to rail network. We have also plan to extend the DFC to Chennai from Mumbai and Kolkata in the second phase,” said Prasad.

Over the last two to three years rail freight traffic has grown by 8 to 11 per cent and is projected to touch 1,100 million tonnes by the end of the 11th Five-Year Plan.

The Rs 40,000 crore DFC project, one of the flagship projects of the railways, is envisaged to carry the projected volume of freight traffic.

While work in the eastern DFC commenced near Dehri-on-Sone last week, work on Western DFC would start this month, Prasad said.

The Eastern Freight Corridor project aims to link Dankuni in West Bengal with Ludhiana in Punjab and the Western Corridor links Delhi with Mumbai
