Anubhuti rail coaches may roll out from Rae Bareli

The new Anubhuti coaches may be rolled out from the rail coach factory in Rae Bareli, the constituency of the UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi.

This is a proposal under the consideration of the Railway Ministry.

Another option is to have such coaches manufactured at each of the coach factories, including Rail Coach Factory, Kapurthala and Integrated Coach Factory, Chennai.

The new proposed coaches of the Indian Railways with better interiors — termed as Anubhuti or experience — may be priced about 40 per cent higher than the AC chair car.

These coaches will have about 50 seats in one coach as against 56 in the executive class coaches.

Improved facilities

“They would have much better interiors, more space for a person, improved lighting, upgraded toilets, automatic opening and closing of internal doors, roller blinds as curtains, LCD video screen, amongst others,” Keshav Chandra, Member-Mechanical, Railway Board, said recently.

Shatabdi trains

The plan is to place one Anubhuti coach in each of the Shatabdi trains that ply on a range of about 400 km, with a travel time of four-six hours.

The Executive Chair Car coaches cost about Rs 2.5 crore. These coaches will cost another Rs 30-40 lakh extra.

Coach interiors of Anubhuti would be on the lines of mocks designed by West Central Railway Coach Rehab Workshop, Bhopal, for other coaches.

The mock-ups of improved chair car, AC 2 tier, and AC 3-tier coaches were at the coach care centre near New Delhi Railway Station. Two Vadodara-based vendors — Kemrock Industries and Exports and Hindustan Fibre Glass Works — have supplied raw material for the new coaches.

Mock models of Anubhuti coaches have not been designed yet, said Railway officials.

Anubhuti fare 1.5 times Shatabdi AC 1 Class

Travelling in ‘Anubhuti’ coach, the special AC luxury class proposed in this year’s rail budget, will be one and half times costlier than the first AC executive class in Shatabdis.
Railways has proposed to introduce a modern coach ‘Anubhuti’ with good ambience in Shatabdi and Rajdhani trains phase-wise, providing higher travel comfort to passengers. “We will begin with one Shatabdi train as apilot project and then Anubhuti coaches will be added in all other 16 Shatabdi trains,” railway minister Pawan Kumar Bansal said here on Wednesday.

He said similarly one Rajdhani train will be selected for introduction of Anubhuti coach to be followed by all other 23 Rajdhani services and mail and express trains will also be equipped with Anubhuti coaches phase-wise. Asked the fare, Bansal said it will be one and half times more than the AC 1 Class in Shatabdis. While AC 1 has 56 seats in Shatabdi, Anubhuti will have 50 ergonomically designed cushioned seats with provisions of LCD video screens.

Now shop on Shatabdi trains

Long journeys on premier Shatabdi trains are set to get interesting with the Railways deciding to introduce onboard shopping facility for a range of luxury products.

Perfumes, skincare products, handbags, watches and exquisite jewellery among other gift items will be available on sale in Shatabdi trains in Executive Class and Chair Cars, a senior Railway Ministry official said.

For chocolate lovers, trolleys showcasing luxury items will have a range of chocolates, the official said. Besides, there will also be souvenirs associated with railways on offer for Shatabdi passengers.

A firm has been engaged to provide on-board facility on a pilot basis in Shatabdi trains for a month, he said, adding, “It will begin shortly with Bhopal Shatabdi. The shopping experience on trolley will also be carried out in other Shatabdi trains to ascertain the response.”

As per the arrangement, the firm has deposited Rs. two lakh as security money and will also pay 12 per cent of the sale to railways.

Based on the response, Railways will decide to expand the trolley service on a long-term basis. “A tendering process will be opted to select the firm for providing on-board shopping facility on regular basis in Shatabdi trains,” the official said.

There will be two trolleys in each Shatabdi which will cover the entire train during the scheduled journey hour.

Aiming at providing more facilities in premier trains, Railways are also planning to introduce on-board entertainment systems in Shatabdi trains where the passengers can view movies and television serials directly via satellite.

Besides, there is also an attempt to improve on-board cleaning service in trains.

“Our aim is to provide better facilities and amenities to passengers in trains and stations so the journey becomes more enjoyable,” he said.

Shatabdi trains to have live TV from new year

Come January and passengers of Shatabdi and Rajdhani trains will be able to watch their favourite serials and movies while travelling. In a smart move, Railways is mulling over to instal television screens on few trains. If all goes well, the New Delhi-Bhopal Shatabdi Express will have the live television facility from January next year.

After the ‘successful’ trial run on the Shatabdi and Rajdhani trains, Duronto and ISO category trains like Bhopal express will be covered. What is more interesting is the fact that passengers can watch shows without any disruption as live TVs will not have any signal problem on the moving train.

According to DRM Delhi, Ashwini Kumar Lohani, “The procedure of tenders – invited for the installation of TVs in Shatabdi coaches- is at the final stage. By the end of December, tenders will be alloted. Thereafter, the contracts for the installation of TV sets along with dish antena will be given.”

As per the tender document, a 48-inch LCD TV screen will be installed at both sides of each passenger coach of the Shatabdi Express.

The trial run of live TV on moving train was carried out eight months back on Delhi-Guwahati Rajdhani Express. After successful testing of signals on the long route train, Railways gave the green signal to the project.
