Matheran monsoon toy train run from Sept 29?

In a first during the monsoon, Central Railway (CR) is likely to run the toy train service on the 3-km Aman Lodge-Matheran stretch from September 29.

Chetan Bakshi, CRS (Central circle), is likely to grant the clearance in a day or two. “It is not proper to disclose the schedule until the official approval comes. But we are prepared to run the service from September 29.

Matheran train to be faster, longer

Journey to Mumbai’s favourite hill station may get faster.

The UNESCO-listed toy train to Matheran from Neral will soon take at least 30 minutes less to reach the destination. Also, the Central Railway (CR) has decided to add more coaches to the train to increase capacity. Crucial trial runs for the project will take place on Saturday.

The narrow gauge train, at present, takes about two-and-a-half hours to cover the 19.7km distance, which vehicles that are allowed till outskirts of Matheran cover in 20-25 minutes.

“The trial runs will be conducted on Saturday to examine the feasibility of reducing the journey time by at least half-an-hour and will add a few more coaches to enhance capacity. As it’s monsoon, the normal passenger runs are closed for traffic; only trial runs will be possible,” a CR official said.

Asked what the aim behind this move was, officials said that with increased speed, they will be able to accommodate one more trip during the day with the same number of trains. At present, there are four trips each both ways on weekdays and five each on weekends. “Adding speed will mean the train will reach faster, and eventually, we will be able to add one more trip,” the CR official said.

General manager Subodh Jain is expected to be present during the runs.
