ATVMs to soon dispense unreserved tickets

Automatic ticket vending machines (ATVMs) at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, Dadar and Lokmanya Tilak Terminus will soon dispense unreserved tickets for long-distance passenger trains. The Central Railway (CR) — which plans to start the facility within a month — will start with stations where long-distance passenger trains originate or halt to provide more options to passengers purchasing unreserved tickets.

Around 9.5 lakh unreserved tickets, including suburban, are sold by CR daily.

Western Railway, too, will have a similar facility. “We will selectively start the facility at certain terminals to gauge passenger response. Subsequently, it will be extended to ATVMs at passenger reservation system (PRS) outside railway premises. If found useful, all ATVMs will have the provision of dispensing unreserved tickets for non-suburban trains,” said Atul Rane, chief public relations officer, CR.

There are a total of 346 ATVMs on CR of which 136 have been newly installed. While the function of providing unreserved ticket is a part of a ticketing machine, it was kept disabled.

Of the new machines, one has been installed at the PRS in Vartak Nagar, Thane. CR plans to have ATVMs at Vidhan Bhavan, Tata Memorial Hospital, Navy Nagar and other places that have PRS facility. While there are 386 ATVMs on CR, 40 old machines installed in 2007 will be condemned, while 52 will be rehabilitated. Defunct parts of 135 old machines have already been changed.
