Motorman rewarded for bravery

The Railway Board has decided to posthumously reward the bravery, the sense of responsibility and duty consciousness exhibited by S. Manohar, the motorman who was instrumental in averting a potential mishap on May 23, an incident that claimed his own life. His commitment to the safety of his passengers even in his dying moments demands the highest honor. The award comes over the compensation that has been worked out for his next kin.

The 48-year-old motorman of the Chennai bound suburban train GM 42032 had disengaged cabin controls and switched on the emergency flasher light before suffering a fatal cardiac arrest. An award has been recommended for loco pilot V. Balachandran too, who had stopped his train (the GM 42029 Chennai-Gummudipoondi) on the adjacent line on noticing the flasher light. He had entrusted his train with the guard before alerting the station master at the next station Kavaraipettai of the emergency. He then drove Manohar’s train to Kavaraipettai. He arranged for Manohar to be carried to a hospital before resuming duties on his train.

The Railway Board is known to reward acts of courage. Back in 2010 four employees were given cash awards for averting a major disaster after a bomb blast damaged the track section at Sithani between Perani and Mundiyambakkam stations in Villupuram.
