Railway police to ‘honey trap’ eve-teasers

To put an end to eve-teasing menace in MMTS trains, the railway police have started using the ‘honey trap’ technique and in a first time move in the state, they have also decided to open history sheets against second time offenders.

While addressing media persons recently at the state police head quarters, DGP V Dinesh Reddy said that according to criminology research, if not controlled early, eve teasers are likely to commit sexual crimes in the future. To nip the problem in the bud, the DGP directed the state police to book cases against eve teasers and prosecute them.

Acting on the directions of the DGP, Secunderabad railway police have adopted the ‘honey trap’ technique to nab eve teasers found harassing women passengers travelling in MMTS trains. Two special women personnel, one in uniform and the other in civil dress, travel along with the passengers. If they notice any eve teasers, they will alert their colleagues travelling in the train and the accused will be arrested when the train halts at the next station, GRP Secunderabad SP M Kanta Rao told TOI.

The eve teasing menace has been identified mostly on the Begumpet – Hi-Tec City stretch where thousands of female IT employees travel every day. In the past two days, the railway police arrested 18 eve teasers on this stretch. All the accused were counselled in the presence of their family members and then remanded in judicial custody.

Earlier, eve teasers used to get away with by paying a fine but as part of the new initiative, the police have slapped cases against them under section 294 (obscene activity) of the IPC. In the case of second time offenders, the cops have decided act tough. “We have decided to open history sheets against repeated offenders,” the SP said. Once the history sheet is opened, the accused has to appear before the police periodically and his movements will be continuously monitored. It will also be difficult for him to get employment in any reputed firm. Getting a passport and visa will also become a difficult task.

After consulting the women IT employees, who travel by MMTS every day, railway police have decided to start a special police beat at Hi-Tec City railway station from 4pm to 10pm. Plans are also afoot to improve the lighting on the platforms in consultation with the railway authorities. Apart from that, posters containing round the clock railway police help line numbers have been put up in all MMTS coaches. The special round the clock railway police helpline numbers are: 27702337/ 9440700040/ 9440904873.
