Railways To Introduce Pre-Engineered Bridges For Speeds Of Over 160 Kmph

Railways are working out a proposal to design and assess existing bridges for speeds of over 160 kmph, Railway Board Chairman Vinay Mittal said. Quick-launch and pre-engineered bridges are vital for the railways because major portion of the bridges on the Indian Railways network are more than a century old, he said. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has planned to construct over 35,000 metres of bridges over the next five years and the estimated cost for a bridge would be Rs 6 lakh to Rs 10 lakh a metre. Railways focus on pre-fabricated bridges as it plays a major role in augmenting infrastructure at difficult terrains in places like Uttarakhand, Jammu & Kashmir or the Northern and Eastern parts of India which are prone to landslides and difficult terrain.
