Banana train to Azadpur mandi from next week

The National Horticulture Board (NHB) will start next week a specially designed 80-container train for bulk transport of banana between Jalgaon in Maharashtra and Azadpur near New Delhi.

“NHB and Container Corporation of India (CONCOR) will introduce a horticulture train between Jalgaon and

Azadpur wholesale market from September 11. This will help reduce the wastage in transit to five per cent from 30 per cent,” NHB Managing Director Bijay Kumar said.

The train will have 80 insulated and ventilated containers. The capacity of each container is 12 tonnes. The train will make five rounds in a month. It will have a 26-hour travel time, including eight hours for loading and unloading.

“We have successfully conducted a dry run of the banana route from Jalgaon to Azadpur and an onion route from Nashik in Maharashtra and to Kolkata and Malda in West Bengal which will terminate in Fatwa, Bihar. We also ran a potato route from Kolkata to Guwahati and from Agra to Bangalore,” he said. But the ‘banana train’ would be first off the block.
