Rlys to modernize signal system

Stung by frequent accidents and mishaps on tracks, the railways has decided to adopt foolproof safety measures concentrating on modernization of signal system at the country level.

According to a Railway Board official, the Board has decided to introduce centralized electrical and electronic interlocking system on all important routes to check recurrence of accidents mainly caused either due to signal failure or overshooting of signals by loco pilots. The railways would introduce this new modern system at about 4,500 stations at the country level, he said.

Besides, the railways would take up track circuiting work on priority basis on all vulnerable routes. About 2,400 block huts have been created across the country to further improve security measures, particularly on tracks. The railways has already installed LED signals at 3,600 stations at the country level, a Board official said, adding the old signalling system is being replaced by most modern and sophisticated ones to enhance efficiency of signalling system.

The board official told TOI that the railways is introducing multiple aspect colour light signals at all crowded points from safety point of view. Warning signals are being installed at 895 places. Work on about 200 km is currently in progress these days at different places in the country, he said, adding the railways is committed to improve signalling system at those places where complaints about signal failures are more often.

According to sources, the Danapur division of East Central Railway (ECR) has witnessed maximum number of signal failures recently causing detention of mail and express trains either at stations or at outer signals. Alarm chain pulling and hose pipe disconnections are other problems plaguing the division for a long time.

  1. It is a good beginning and the cash crunch should not deter the Rlys from going ahead to improve the signalling all over the Indian Rlys.
